1850s

  • 1885, November 1 – Lake Calhoun Mission organized by Simpson Methodist Episcopal Church.
  • 1886, November 10 – Church organized as Lake Street Methodist Episcopal Church, with 14 charter members. First pastor, Rev. David J. Higgins.
  • 1887, April – Purchased Town Hall Building and two lots for first church building, southeast corner of Lake Street and Fremont.
  • 1895, January 4 – Town Hall burned to the ground.
  • 1895, August 11 – The new Lake Street M.E. Church rebuilt on previous site and dedicated.

1900s

  • 1900 – Debt paid. Mortgage burning ceremony.
  • 1906 – Twentieth anniversary. Building program started for new church on 31st and Fremont.
  • 1907 – Joyce Methodist Episcopal Church completed. Named in honor of Bishop Isaac Wilson Joyce and dedicated by Bishop Berry on October 27, 1907.
  • 1914 – Basement completed. Five additional rooms and ladies’ parlor.
  • 1917 – Annual Northern Minnesota Methodist Conference held at Joyce Church.
  • 1936 – Fiftieth anniversary.
  • 1937 – Tragic deaths of Dr. and Mrs. George Zentz.
  • 1937 – Men’s Club organized.
  • 1938 – Rev. Olin Jackson comes to Joyce Church.
  • 1939 – The Uniting Conference renames church, Joyce Memorial Methodist Church.
  • 1940 – Woman’s Society of Christian Service organized.
  • 1941 – Fifty-fifth anniversary of Joyce Church.
  • 1943, May 6 – Fire destroys church interior. Renovation completed in November,
  • 1945 – New automatic oil burner. Coal bin converted to storage room.
  • 1946 – Purchase of first church parsonage, at 3046 Irving Avenue South.
  • 1946 – Dedication of new pipe organ. Deagan chimes of 21 bells installed as memorial to Mrs. Jennie S. Herrick.
  • 1947, February 2 – World War II Service Flag lowered at morning service.

1950s

  • 1951 – Evangelism Advance Program adds 85 new church members.
  • 1953 – New Joyce Church parsonage at 3953 Ewing Avenue South.
  • 1955 – The Chapel of Peace addition completed.
  • 1963 – Rev. and Mrs. Douglas Marks welcomed to Joyce.
  • 1966 – Minneapolis Southwest Parish formed.
  • 1966 – Joyce Nursery School organized.
  • 1968 – Church renamed Joyce United Methodist Church.
  • 1968 – Dutton residence at 1222 West 31st Street purchased and named Joyce House.
  • 1969 – Emergency Food Shelf opens in Joyce House.
  • 1969 – Joyce-Calhoun Child Care Center opened in Joyce Church building.
  • 1970 – Cooperative programming with Lyndale Congregational Church including Men’s Club, Deaconess Program, and Faith Seminars.
  • 1971 – Deaconess Lorraine Howard joins staff in October.
  • 1973 – Women’s group renamed Joyce United Methodist Women. Wesleyan Service Guild becomes Wesleyan Circle.
  • 1976 – First woman trustee elected, Florence Wendorf.
  • 1976, May 16 – Ninetieth anniversary of Joyce Church.
  • 1976 – Doug Marks retires. Rev. Eugene Grover comes to Joyce.
  • 1976 – Southwest Parish dissolves.
  • 1979 – Rape and Sexual Assault Center moves into Joyce House.
  • 1981-2 – Southside United Methodist Coalition formed.
  • 1982 – First annual Heritage Sunday honoring Joyce nonagenarians.
  • 1982 – Rev. Cooper Wiggen comes to Joyce Church.
  • 1982 – Furnace replaced.
  • 1986 – Joyce Centennial.
